Several species of carpenter bees inhabit the San Pedro River Drainage. Despite a detailed search, I could not find a match to identify this species with its pair of striking red head spots. Carpenter bees are big, impressive insects that chew their way into wood, constructing tunnels where they raise their young. I have watched them boring into live mesquite trees, an astounding feat, for mesquite is an incredibly tough, dense hardwood. The tunnels can approach lengths of twelve inches.
